The Daily News, formerly the Illustrated Daily News, is a morning daily tabloid newspaper published in New York City. It is the first successful American tabloid and was founded by Joseph Medill Patterson in 1919 as a subsidiary of the Tribune Company of Chicago. It had a peak circulation of 2.4 million copies per day in 1947 and as of 2019 was the eleventh highest-circulated newspaper in the United States.
The New York Daily News has long been an important source of news, sports and entertainment in New York City. It was the most popular newspaper in the city from the 1920s to the 1990s and is still one of the top-selling newspapers in the United States.
In the early 20th century, the paper specialized in sensational crime and scandal coverage, with lurid photographs and cartoons. It also covered politics and social intrigue. It was an early user of the Associated Press wirephoto service and developed a large staff of photographers.
Despite its success, the paper faced serious financial problems in the late 1970s and 1980s, and its circulation dropped rapidly. It was sold to Tronc, a media company in Chicago, for $1. The sale closed in 2017.
Today the Daily News is headquartered at 450 West 33rd Street, near the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Lexington Avenue. The building was designed by architects John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood in 1929 and is part of Manhattan West, the area south of Fifth Avenue that includes the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.
A giant globe and weather instruments decorate the lobby of The News Building, which is also the headquarters for the Associated Press. The building straddles the railroad tracks that enter Pennsylvania Station, and is a historic landmark of New York City.
New York is home to the world’s largest newspaper market. The Daily News has a total of three daily print editions: one in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens, and two in Manhattan. The paper also operates a television station and a radio station, both of which are owned by the Tribune Company.
The NYPD is the city’s police force and has the authority to issue handgun permits to licensed New Yorkers. Since 2015, the department has issued nearly 40,000 licenses.
Almost half of those issued to city residents are in Staten Island, a borough that is the city’s third-largest, and is the most densely populated. That means Staten Islanders are more likely to own legal handguns than people in other parts of the city, including Brooklyn and Manhattan.
But the state’s gun laws are complicated, and it’s often difficult for new residents to obtain a permit. So the number of handgun permits in Staten Island may be much higher than what the data shows.
