Entertaiment is the act of entertaining, or the process of gratifying the senses. Entertainment can be done through a variety of mediums such as movies, sports, music, and art. These mediums captivate our senses and create an euphoric state in which we forget all about our troubles and wish that the moment would last forever.
The suffix -ment was formed by adding -e to Latin stems in Vulgar Latin and Old French (as in amazement, betterment, and merriment). It is also used with verbal roots ending in -er or ir in English and represents the Indo-European root ten, which means “to stretch.” The original sense of the word was to hold inside, but by late 15c. had come to mean maintain, keep up with, or support; that of gratify is 1620s.
A person who puts on a show for the amusement of others is an entertainer. Dan has a lot of stereo entertainment equipment in his room.
